Student News Spring 2023

Zack Anderson presented his paper "Translator/Transducer: Definition, Fidelity, and Translation in the Ursonates" at the Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture Since 1900. He also presented a talk entitled "Futility Music: A Poetic Investigation of Sound, Violence, and Power" at the UGA Humanities Festival. His poem "Futility Music II" is forthcoming in The Spectacle. Zack will be joining The Georgia Review as a Graduate Editor in June.

Nathan Dixon has recently published a book review in The Georgia Review, a photo-essay in Quarterly West, and a speculative memoir in Old Pal Magazine. He was a finalist in both fiction and nonfiction at the Agnes Scott College Writers' Festival and runner-up for the annual Italo Calvino Prize. Forthcoming, he has an academic article in MELUS Journal, a one-act play in The Cincinnati Review, and a short story in The Ocean State Review. He successfully defended his dissertation in April.

Book CoverIn March, the NCTE book Dynamic Activities for First-Year Composition: 96 Ways to Immerse, Inspire, and Captivate Students was published. Emily Beckwith has two FYW activities in the book, one of which is co-authored with Savannah Jensen.

Genevieve Guzmán visited the University of Liverpool as a short-term doctoral research fellow to present at the annual English graduate conference on the postcolonial legacy of the city’s historic botanic gardens. Under their pen name Arlie, they published a reprint of their poem "True Fresh" in a disability poetics folio of Zoeglossia fellows with The Poetry Foundation archive. Next academic year they will staff the GradsWrite studio at the UGA writing center.

 

David Lumpkin’s short story “The Dying Person,” written for Professor Aruni Kashyap’s Fall 2022 Creative Writing seminar, was accepted for publication in STORY Magazine, due out later this year. Pitting the personal against the political, the story tracks one Alabamian’s bungling attempt to nurse a dying woman through her final night.

Kaitlin Thurlow's painting "Away" was selected for the 48th Juried Exhibition at the Lyndon House Arts Center in"Away" Athens. The exhibit ran from March 2 to May 6, 2023, juried by Maria Elena Ortiz, the Curator at The Modern Museum of Fort Worth, Texas. Along with Jasmine Best, Lauren Fancher and Ray Lee, she discussed her artistic process at the show's weekly Artist Talks on April 13. Describing her body of work, "Daydreams and Nightscapes," the abstract paintings "call to mind a horizon or a field or a simple repetitive pattern like the stripes on a rugby shirt. Each work invites the viewer to imagine a world tilting between certainty and uncertainty."

Abhijit Sarmah's poem, "On Asking My Mother About Winter 1990," was published in the POETRY magazine's January 2023 issue. 

Mikaela Warner presented parts of her dissertation on Henry VIII and Disability Studies at both the Willson Center's Humanities Festival panel "Between Lines: English Graduate Student Research Showcase" and at the annual meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America in the "Henry VIII: New Directions" workshop.

Sundress Publications will publish Hannah V Warren’s debut full poetry collection Slaughterhouse for Old Wives’ Tales in Winter 2023. This year, Hannah’s poems have published in Pleiades and Seneca Review, and she has forthcoming work in Arkansas International, Colorado Review, and Southeast Review. In December, Extrapolation published her critical article “The Sin of Reproducing: Intersectional Marginalization in N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season.” Hannah is currently on a Fulbright in Germany where she’s writing her dissertation.

Christina Wood won an Appleby Doctoral Award and a Writer of Note Award from the De Groot foundation to work on summer research and her novel in progress.

Undergraduate senior Kate Yarbrough's paper, "'As far as I now perceive it': Landscape Construction in the Ode to Psyche," has been selected for the Best Paper Award for the Arts, Humanities, and Media category at the CURO Symposium. Kate was the inaugural recipient of the Elizabeth A. Kraft Award for the same project in 2022. The CURO Symposium Best Paper selection committee was made up of UGA faculty readers.
