Eighteenth-Century Literary Studies

Eighteenth-century studies at UGA emphasizes a variety of literary and conceptual approaches to the period, with particular strengths in feminist scholarship, science and literature, interdisciplinary studies, literary history, material culture, and transatlantic print culture.

Our graduate students have the benefit of strong library resources in the field, including access to such electronic resources as Literature Online, Eighteenth-Century Collections Online, Early English Books Online, and Women Writers Online. We work closely with students on internal and external fellowship and grant applications. Advanced graduate students have the opportunity to teach courses in British literature and are eligible to teach “Introduction to British Culture,” the gateway course in the UGA British-Irish Studies Program.

The department is home to the Rodney Baine Lecture Series (founded in 1985), which brings prominent scholars of eighteenth-century studies to campus. The 18th/19th Century Colloquium [internal link: https://engl.test.franklin.uga.edu/CENCL] is a speakers and workshop program housed in the Department of English that promotes intellectual inquiry across the disciplines.

Graduates of the program have continued on to tenure-track positions and successful teaching and research careers at liberal arts colleges, state universities, and research institutions.
