In collaboration with the Philosophy Institute of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences, the Department of English of the University of Georgia will organize a day-long symposium on Wednesday, March 26 at the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts. "After the World" will present a series of philosophical and literary discussions focusing on the various ways the very idea of a shared world has undergone significant transformations over the last few decades. 

 

  • 9am Morning Session:

     

    • Roland Végső (University of Georgia): “The Time of World Politics”
    • Benjamin Brewer (University of Toronto): “Being-Towards-Extinction”
    • Steven Swarbrick (Baruch College, CUNY): “What in the World? Enjoyment as X Factor”
    • Nathan Gorelick (Barnard College): “The Unconscious In Ruins”

 

  • 2pm Afternoon Session:

     

    • Alexander Fyfe (University of Georgia): “Achille Mbembe: Thinking the World Through Form”
    • Ronald Mendoza-de Jesús (Emory University): “Unworldly Islands: Cosmopoiesis, Abjection, Sovereignty”
    • Rok Benčin (Philosophy Institute of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences): “Worlds after the World”
