Undergraduates: Submit poetry for the Virginia Rucker Walter Poetry Prize!

Undergraduate English majors are invited to enter the annual Virginia Rucker Walter Poetry Prize!

This year, the judge will select a winner and 2 runners up:  $1000 to the winner and $500 to second and third place winners

The competition will be judged this year by poet Julia Anna Morrison.

To enter the competition, please follow the guidelines below:

Each entrant must assemble two different PDF files. The first file contains the poem only. You may only submit one poem. This file should bear no markings identifying the entrant. The second file is a simple cover sheet, containing your name, e-mail address, telephone number, and the title and first line of the poem you're submitting.

Please send both files, attached to a single e-mail message, to Jami Mays, Creative Writing Program Assistant, at this address: jami.mays@uga.edu. The subject line of the message should read, "Poetry Prize 2024."

The deadline for all submissions is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 11th. Results will be announced in mid-April.

About the Judge:

Anna is a Pushcart-nominated poet and screenwriter from Atlanta, Georgia with an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Anna’s first book of poems, Long Exposure, was published in the fall with Moon City Press. Her poems have recently appeared in Best American Poetry 2022, The Adroit Journal, EX/POST, and Brink and placed 3rd in Narrative’s 14th Annual Poetry Contest. Her writing and films deal with themes of familial grief and early motherhood. Anna is a Lecturer in Screenwriting Arts at the University of Iowa and co-edits Two Peach with Catherine Pond.
