Savage Conversations by LeAnne Howe

The American Indian Community House will host a staged reading of Edison Chair in American Literature LeAnne Howe's play Savage Conversations on September 24th on Governor's Island in New York at 2 p.m.

Savage Conversations concerns Mary Todd Lincoln and the Savage Indian she said tortured her nightly during her confinement in an insane asylum in Batavia, Illinois. Professor Howe connects this haunting/hallucination to the 38 Dakota men executed in 1862 on Mary Todd Lincoln's husband’s orders in a synchronized hanging attended by 4000 settlers. The reading will feature Nicholson Billey, Marla Carlson, and Nora Cole.
