Hugh Ruppersburg and Stillpoint celebrate 50 years

RuppersburgHugh Ruppersburg and Stillpoint celebrate 50 years

Emeritus University Professor of English and Senior Associate Dean Dr. Hugh Ruppersburg and his wife Tricia Ruppersburg established an Endowment Fund for the magazine upon his retirement. Dr. Ruppersburg was one of the first editors of Stillpoint Literary Magazine when he was an undergraduate student at UGA.  He had this to say about Stillpoint’s 50 year history: “Stillpoint was a central part of my education at UGA.  It offered community to students interested in poetry and writing in general. It provided a way to get to know other English majors and people generally interested in writing creatively. It gave me a chance to consider the importance of poetry and offered me an opportunity to write it.  It gave me experience in editing, in making discriminations about the submissions we received. It was a small way to contribute to the creative and literary culture of the department and the University. That the magazine has existed for fifty years is a remarkable testament to the students and faculty who have kept it alive. It’s not often you encounter an undergraduate literary magazine that has lasted so long. I hope it will last for decades to come, that the department and University will support and nurture it, and that it will continue to encourage students to write and to read poetry and fiction.”

StillpointStillpoint Literary Magazine to Publish its 50th Issue, written by Olivia Babuka Black, Junior Editor.

Stillpoint Literary Magazine is an on-campus, student-created literary magazine released every spring. Since its founding in 1967, Stillpoint has fostered a student community dedicated to honoring and lifting up student work. We seek to showcase the emerging and established writers and artists of the University of Georgia, Athens, and beyond.

Stillpoint will publish our 50th issue showcasing Athens’ finest: the best of the offbeat and the unheard.  What is most inspirational, to Stillpoint staffers, is the work submitted to our magazine each year. The work that, despite individuals’ busy schedules, daily life, and everyday minutiae, still is finished, submitted, and lands in our laps. Work that boldly claims, “I am here, I am important, I matter.”

Stillpoint continues to foster a community in which this creation is encouraged and cultivated by dedicated student peers. This year’s Senior Co-Editors are Sherry Luo and Maxwell Rabb.  Working alongside them are executive staff members Olivia Babuka Black (Junior Editor), Nick Hummel (Online and Visual Arts Editor), MK Manoylov (Submissions Editor), Dane Tillman (Secretary), James Lim (External Affairs), and Ashton Sanders (Social Media Manager). The 2018-19 staff includes Telia Garner, D’Ariel Myrick, Avery Bufkin, Diana Richtman, Leigh Karegeannes, Madelyn Schroeder, Laura Khalidi, Seamus Murrock, Clarissa Bond, Rainey Mcbride, Mary Schauf, Ashley Wu, Logan White, Anna Franklin, Alexandria Cross, Jacqueline Prine, Sabrina Norris, Lily Harrington and Karla Nemanic.

Our 50th issue is sure to be as offbeat, new, and elusive as ever. To learn more, get involved, or submit to Stillpoint, go to
